HI, Andy. Great list. Two quick additions:

#6 -- Say thanks. Notice early efforts, even for the most modest of referrals. When others see that we notice, that they're trying, they're more likely to try again.

#7 -- Return the favor. Better yet, start by giving first. Try to find ways to support your connections' businesses, whether it's referrals or "I was thinking about your business" ideas. Never leave your referral network wondering if they are working harder to support your business than you are working to support theirs.

Thanks for talking about this important issue, Andy!

Hey Andy,
There's a really great book called Wombat Selling which takes the heat out of the sales process.
Essentially the writer says that the buyer converts themselves from offers that are made by the seller. All a seller can do is make what he calls 'check moves' which could be as simple as a phone call , email, sending a free article, posting a blog, and all of these in the end set up the conditions for a customer to buy. Makes the process a whole lot simpler AND takes the heat out of thinking that you HAVE TO CONVERT leads into sales

Andy,

Very well stated and I completely agree that we need/must invest more of our time and resources towards our prospective clients goals and objectives.......especially in areas outside of our core competencies. I think it helps move the prospective client closer to being a permanent client.

See you soon.

Andy - WOW! This is great advice. While I have generally been a 'giver' in terms of networking, it hadn't occurred to me to also think of clients in this way. As I sit here contemplating this wonderful insight, I think several of my clients are going to get calls today about the ways in which I can help them. That way, everyone wins, right? :) Thanks for the impressive article.

Andy,

WOW... That is some VALUABLE (easy-to-read & understand) information! From a selfish standpoint, I am glad that you are providing this eBook for FREE... From a business standpoint (are you crazy?), you could get a lot of money by selling this because it can help everyone learn and become more profitable. Keep up the Excellent work!

I agree with your sentiments Andy.
If you can get it on one page then its likely to be read more than once.
By the way we have a new product coming up in 2010 which takes three of the measures off The Financial Fence and puts them into something we're calling the One Minute Business Checkup. It's even faster than a one page business plan and is designed to let someone check out their business model in less than a minute from seven easy questions.
Send me an email if you'd like to have a look at the beta version
